The trend towards living a healthier lifestyle is here to stay and that includes buying natural and organic food. For those of us who don’t have space, time or patience to grow a garden in the less than ideal Calgary weather, we want to find the best place to buy our organic groceries. Trying to avoid the organic section in Superstore, the goal is to purchase from businesses that specialize in natural and organic products to make sure we are getting the crème de la crème of pesticide-free foods.
Calgary is booming with local organic gems located all around the city with the perfect places to pick up groceries, and other organic and natural products. Calgary voted and picked their favourite place to go.
Winner: Community Natural Foods
With three locations across the city, it’s easy to understand why Calgarians love Community. The grocery store has made its name in Calgary since 1977, paving the way for sustainable initiatives in the grocery industry like being the first grocer in Calgary to stop using plastic bags or selling single-serve plastic water bottles. We can thank Community for pushing the organic revolution forward in Calgary, making it easier to source natural and organic foods. They carry thousands of products to suit every dietary or health restriction. Community is one of Calgary’s favourite places to buy organic food not just for the products but for the community they have built in our city.
Runner Up One: Blush Lane Organics
Blush Lane started off in the Calgary Farmer’s Market and has grown much larger with the support and love from Calgarians. They have made a positive impact in our fridge and the community by actively promoting sustainable agriculture and taking environmentally conscious actions. They also give back to the community by donating fresh produce and groceries to local food banks and charities such as Leftovers. You can visit them at the Farmers market or one of their standalone shops in Bridgeland, Aspen Woods and soon to be Marda Loop.
Runner Up Two: Sunnyside Natural Market
At the heart of Kensington, Sunnyside Natural Market is serving up the best quality, local and organic products. They emphasize the importance of knowing the farmers you’re buying from and supporting local when possible - something Calgarians truly value in the community. They carry products to fit in any diet and lifestyle, making it accessible to everyone. Not only the food, but the people that work at Sunnyside make the shopping experience feel like we’re buying from our neighbours.
